Senior Football - 40th Anniversary Dinner

The Football Club was formed in 1968 and to celebrate 40 years in existence, it was decided to hold a reunion dinner at Sywell Road last September. Committee member Jim Cardy undertook the enormous task of trying to track down and contact large numbers of old players and committee members to invite them to the evening. An initial list of 150 was the basis for the search and after three months of hard work on Jim’s behalf we had approximately 90 people who stated a wish to attend and requested a ticket.

Our speakers for the night were invited; Derrick Pearce, the Football Club’s very first President, Brian Hill, an Old Grammarian and ex Premier League and International referee, and finally, Ian Addis. Ian writes a regular Saturday evening column in the Evening Telegraph as one of the “Licensed Cranks”, commenting on local football, old and present.

By the time of the night, over 20 of those who stated that they would attend had cried off for one reason or another – very frustrating for us all as it left us with no time to seek replacements. However, that said, the evening was a great success with members of our very first team from 1968 being in attendance, together with a good cross section of the other decades. A very healthy level of conversation was struck up as old friends remade acquaintances after a number of years. The speakers entertained us with their varied talks before and after a superb meal.

Everyone attending received an engraved memento celebrating the anniversary, together with a souvenir programme.
